1st Generation Nissan NP300 Hardbody Bakkie
2007 – Current
|
Although previously known just as the Nissan Hardbody, in 2007 this amazing workhorse had a complete revamp and was re-launched as the Nissan NP300 Hardbody. This saw what was soon to become one of South Africa’s top-selling bakkies receive its first ever reliable South African-built, fuel-friendly and powerful diesel engine (which it still sports today, along with some improvements along the way). To date, there have been both Single Cab and Double Cab options made available in the NP300 Range, with the Nissan NP300 Double Cab coming in a Hi-Rider Variant.
With no end in sight for the popularity of these robust vehicles, there are currently the following NP300 Model Variants in South Africa:
- NP300 2.0 Base Single Cab
- NP300 2.0 Mid Single Cab
- NP300 2.5 TDi Base Single Cab
- NP300 2.5 TDi Mid Single Cab
- NP300 2.4 Hi-Rider Double Cab
- NP300 2.5 TDi Hi-Rider Double Cab
- NP300 2.4 Hi-Rider 4×4 Double Cab
Did You Know? The NP300 Hardbody Bakkies built in South Africa were so much in demand outside of our borders, that they were sold in over 34 African countries and exported to Russia, The Ukraine, The U.A.E, and Lebanon. They were one of South Africa’s most popular export bakkies and played a major part in ensuring that the local automotive manufacturing industry stayed competitive and relevant on the international stage. Known around the world as the Nissan NP300, South Africa is the only country where it is called the Hardbody. This model was discontinued in 2021. |

Nissan Hardbody Bakkie
1988 – 2006
|
The Nissan Hardbody history is that it is one of the very first Nissan commercial vehicles to be mass-produced in South Africa, the Original Nissan Hardbody ruled the dirt roads of building sites, mines and farms for one year shy of two decades. During this time it became legendary for its tough no nonsense approach, which is why it was dubbed the Hardbody in the first place. It was updated in 1999 to include better safety and comfort features, as well as a few style changes to the body design. This made it even more appealing to businesses that were looking for delivery vehicles and not just robust vehicles that could take on almost any building lot. It was this change that saw the Hardbody become a household name, and establish the Nissan Hardbody brand as a South African icon.
Three years later the Hardbody received a complete makeover, with a look and feel that is still very much part of the 1st generation Nissan NP300 that is around today.
Did You Know? The Nissan Hardbody replaced the Datsun Truck which was in constant production from 1955 through to 1997. However, what you might not know about the Nissan Hardbody History is that there was a name change in 1983 when the Datsun brand was phased out and replaced with the Nissan name. Subsequently, the Datsun brand has relaunched in South Africa, and although it no longer has a bakkie in its range, there is a panel van which carries on the legacy of Datsun Commercial Vehicle pride. |
