Used Nissan Navara Bakkies and Pickups
Are you looking for a used Nissan Navara? The Nissan Navara history dates back to its global launch in 1997. Since then the Nissan Navara bakkie has become one of the most sought-after international and South African pickups. Before the Navara, bakkies were simply workhorses and nothing more. The Nissan Navara changed that thanks to its workhorse pedigree and class-leading good looks, exceptional safety features and comfort levels, which were comparable to family vehicles than other LCVs. The value-for-money package that the Navara offers has ensured that it is one of the most popular vehicles on South African roads and dirt tracks at the moment; and even more so when it is a quality used Nissan Navara 4×4 from Group1.
Three Generations of Used Nissan Navara
From the very first Nissan Navara in 1997, tracing the Nissan Navara history, until the latest version of this popular pickup today, thousands of these exceptionally used bakkies have taken to the roads and dirt tracks of South Africa. The sheer quantity of vehicles available over this time is staggering, to say the least, and subsequently, there are various trim levels and model versions that have been available over the years. Below we have a more detailed breakdown of the different generations of used Navara vehicles, and we have tried our best to ensure that the information is as accurate as possible. Please note however that not all pre-owned Navara models might have been available in South Africa, so the specs below can be seen as more of a global spec overview than merely a local one.
3rd Generation Nissan Navara 2014 – Present
|
Nissan unveiled the third generation Navara on 11 June 2014, but it was released globally using a staggered approach due to high international demand until 2017. Coincidently this was the year that it was first launched in South Africa, and instantly the new refined looks, improved comfort levels and technological and safety features found in all trim levels made it an instant best-seller in South Africa as well.
Even though the 2nd generation model was still in production in many countries, the 3rd generation started production in Thailand in July 2014 and later in South Africa.
On November 5, 2020, Nissan unveiled the facelifted Navara and introduced the new PRO-2X and PRO4X trim levels. While the engines remained unchanged, the update included the addition of active safety equipment and new Nissan Intelligent Mobility features across the range.
Due to the popularity and ruggedness of the latest generation of Nissan Navara, our inventory boasts a wide array of used models. If, however, you are looking for a newer model used Nissan Navara, or even a quality demo model Nissan Navara, then please contact us to check availability.
Did You Know? The current third-generation Nissan Navara platform base is being used by the NISMO team to create a contender for the Coupe Rallye Quebec series. Already this highly advanced pickup has completed eight stage rallies and two hill climbs without suffering one mechanical failure. This is a very impressive feat when you realise just how tough and arduous this epic offroad race is.
The addition of two new double-cab models for 2024; the entry-level XE and mid-range LE has expanded Nissan’s Navara current bakkie range in SA to 14 variants.

2nd Generation Nissan Navara 2004 – 2021
|
In 2004 the second generation of Nissan Navara was launched worldwide to great acclaim. All trim levels now came with a fully boxed ladder frame, increased wheelbase and an impressive overall length of 5.22 metres. The new powertrain options also helped to set it apart from its competitors at the time and helped to ensure that the Navara not only took but also remained, at the top of the global pickup sales charts until it was replaced by the third and current generation of Nissan Navara in 2016. This generation of Navara became a regular sight on South African roads, and to this day makes up the largest percentage of used Navara’s for sale in South Africa.
In 2010 the second-generation Navara also received a facelift as well as spec upgrades across the board. This saw the introduction of a new 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine that took this already legendary bakkie to new heights of popularity thanks to the 175 kW of power and 500 Nm of torque that it put out. This sealed its place in South African history as one of the best bakkies in its class for towing and going off-road in even the harshest of conditions.
Did You Know? Nissan South Africa led a successful charge in the local ABSA Off-Road Series using the 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2008 Nissan Navara to win the driver’s championships titles in those years.

1st Generation Nissan Navara 1997 – 2022
|
First launched in 1997 for the 1998 model year, the Nissan Navara was originally built to replace the Nissan Hardbody Truck in South Africa and was at first called the NP300. However, the popularity of both these bakkie variants ensured a high demand for both, and the Navara became not a replacement but a stablemate for the venerable Hardbody NP300 Workhorse which is still available in South Africa and a few other countries globally to this day. Progressively upgraded over the next few years with better engines and features, the first-generation second-hand Nissan Navara bakkies are still extremely popular today in the markets in which they were sold thanks to their tough-as-nails reputation and no-nonsense approach to even the hardiest of driving situations.
Looks-wise, the first-generation Nissan Navara remained the same until 2001 when it was given its first facelift. This was to prove to be a genius move on the part of Nissan, as the invigorated new looks ensured a resurgence of interest in the pickup and directly led to the introduction of the second generation of Navara in South Africa, which started the local love affair with what was soon to become one of the country’s most wanted bakkies.
Did You Know? The first generation Navara was available in; Japan, USA, Canada, Philippines, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile, as well as in Europe, Parts of Africa, Asia, Australasia, The Middle East, and the Persian Gulf Countries. It was not released in South Africa however, and was instead replaced by the Nissan NP300. This amazing workhorse is still available in South Africa today, although be it in an updated format. If you would like to know more about these NP300’s, then feel free to visit our Used Nissan NP300 page on this site for more information. It is still in production in certain countries to this day.
