The History of the Nissan Micra
This compact 5-door hatchback that’s known for its big attitude has the history of Nissan Micra is long and distinguished, with the first model being produced way back in 1982 (although it was never sold in South Africa). While the previous models of the Micra may have been good, if you are interested in Nissan Micra model history, you’ll be intrigued to know that the Micra’s unique and recognisable bubble shape was introduced in the third generation from 2002-2007.
The third generation’s unique shape drew from the Nissan mm.e concept car that had wowed at the Frankfurt Motor Show the year before. The Micra 2004 model was updated with the addition of clear front indicator lamps, new wheel covers, new colouring options as well as improved audio systems. Not resting on their laurels, Nissan updated the Micra again in 2005, bringing out, amongst others, a newly designed grille, new bumpers, improved audio and trim options as well as several engine modifications. Two years later the Micra 2007 was facelifted with a range of cosmetic tweaks, tech upgrades and sports bumpers and spoilers on all models except the base.
The current generation of Mirca is the fifth-generation and was launched in 2017. With a new look, new engine and classed as a Supermini 5-door hatchback, this is like no Micra the world has ever seen before. It is a reinvention, a rebirth and a relaunch of a powerhouse vehicle that helped to define the entry level affordable vehicle market.
5 Generations of Affordable Micra Reliability!
Let’s take a more detailed look at the different generations of Micra Hatchbacks manufactured by Nissan. Please note however that not all generations of Micra were or are available in South Africa, but this is indicated on the generation description below where applicable.

These figures of 6.2 L/100 km* (for the 1.2l Visia+) and 7.56 L/100 km* (for the 1.5l Tekna) are due in part to the Micra’s Nissan engines, but also because this generation of Micra has a drag coefficient of just 0.32. 3rd Generation Nissan Micra (First SA Model)
2002–2010
|
This is the Nissan Micra that first launched in South Africa, which is why it is sometimes erroneously called the first-generation Micra in South Africa. It was first launched in Japan in 2002, and was developed with input from Renault. This new version of the Micra had a longer wheelbase than previous models and for the first time, the now synonymous shape of the Micra was seen. This shape also now included the headlamps that extended to the wing-tops that has become the signature look of all Micra’s since.
In 2004 the Micra was updated to include a massive amount of new safety and luxury features. It was also made available in 7 new colours for the first time, but it was not until late 2007 that the third-generation Nissan Micra received its final cosmetic tweaks, which included a slightly new look to the headlights, new chrome housings for the indicators, a new seat fabric design, improved dashboard features, bluetooth connectivity, and sport bumpers and spoilers.
Did You Know? The popularity of the third-generation Nissan Micra hit a high in 2009 when nearly 122,000 units were sold worldwide. |

2nd Generation Nissan Micra (Not Available in SA)
1992–2007
|
The second-generation Nissan Micra was first built in the United Kingdom, and later launched in a number of countries around the globe. This generation of Nissan Micra was powered by new engines and came with a host of new safety and comfort features. It was an instant hit, and immediately garnered praise from the public and critics alike, with it being awarded some very prestigious awards, including European Car of the Year Award for 1993 (it was the first Japanese car to ever do so), The Good Design Award in Japan, and the Car of the Year Award for 1992 in Japan.
During its lifetime, the second-generation Micra received numerous facelifts, with the first being in 1996, the next one in 1998, and another occurring again in 2000. Although not sold as a new vehicle outside of Taiwan and the Philippines after 2003, this version of the Nissan Micra still proved to be very popular in the used vehicle market thanks to its durability and reliability.
Did You Know? There was a luxury version of the second-generation Nissan Micra that was available in some international markets. Known as the Bolero or the Verita, it was sold from 1999 to 2003, and sported a completely redesigned exterior, and included an interior which even had leather seats. |

1st Generation Nissan Micra (Not Available in SA)
1982–1992
|
As Nissan Micra history goes, the very first Micra was introduced to the world in 1982 as a Japanese exclusive which was intended as a replacement for the popular but ageing Nissan Cherry. However, due to its immediate popularity with young and first-time drivers because of its competitive pricing point it was introduced into the European market in June 1983 and into Canada it went on sale for the 1985 model year. This first-generation Micra was known for its exceptionally low fuel consumption, which was made possible by a newly developed Nissan engine, and this further endeared it to its young but soon to be upwardly mobile young drivers.
In 1985 the first-generation Nissan Micra received its first facelift, although be it a minor one, and it was relaunched in June 1995. In Japan, there was once again an exclusive version of the Micra launched, which included an ambitious addition of a turbocharger to the Micra’s small but reliable 1.0 L engine.
1989 saw a second, and this time more obvious facelift, that included a new style of deeper bumpers, the addition of a new front grille, various cabin interior improvements and redesigns, and a change in the look of the Micra’s headlights. It was this version of the first generation Micra that was available for sale until the second generation Micra was introduced.
Did You Know? The body style of the first generation Micra was originally going to be used by Fiat in Italy. However, Fiat opted to go for the Uno design instead. This gave Nissan the opportunity to use an already existing design, which in turn helped them to minimise costs. |

Interested in the used Nissan Micra models previously available for sale?
While there were two more generations of the Nissan Micra globally, South Africa started with the third generation Nissan Micra between 2002 and 2010. While simplistic in design, it was the first model sporting the shape we’ve all become so fond of.
The fourth-generation Micra was launched in 2011 with a few small tweaks that made a big difference, becoming one of the top-selling Nissan cars across the world. It is also one of the most affordable new and used hatchbacks on the market with plenty of features, exceptional build quality and fuel economy to match.
The vastly modernised fifth-generation Micra was a relaunch of a model that helped shape the entry-level vehicle market. Regardless of the used Nissan Micra model, you will not be disappointed. For ease of reference, here are some of the previously sold used Nissan Micra vehicles.
