Nissan Almera Model History
The Nissan Almera history starts with the first generation Almera which replaced the Nissan Sunny in 1995. The Almera 1998 model featured a facelift in which the bumpers were redesigned, and the sportier models, such as the Si/SRi received front splitters. The Almera Gti also received an all-around body kit, lip spoilers and integrated brake lights which made it one of the sportiest looking sub-compact cars of its time.
The second generation Almera was launched in 2000 and was available until the Almera 2006 edition. It featured smoother lines than the previous generation, the second generation Almera was exceptionally popular worldwide, especially here in South Africa where they were built in Pretoria. The second generation also received a facelift with the Almera 2003-2006 models. The facelifted models featured updated styling, new engines and a retuned suspension. The second generation facelift also introduced the Almera 2.2 dCi, one of the fastest Nissan cars sold at the time.
The current and last generation Almera has built on the legacy of the Nissan Almera history and has proven to be every bit as popular and loved as the older Nissan Almera models. For your convenience, we have included a breakdown of all of the most popular Almera models below:
3rd Generation Nissan Almera
2011 – 2024 (2013 Launch in South Africa)
|
Launched globally towards the end of 2011, and produced right here in South Africa from 2013 onwards for both local and international resale, the third-generation Nissan Almera has proven to be a hidden gem in the Nissan lineup. Its legendary reliability, economical running and maintenance costs and high safety values have made it popular as a family and commuter car.
In South Africa, there are two model variants of the Almera sold. These are the Nissan Almera 1.5 Litre Acenta with Manual Transmission and the Nissan Almera 1.5 Litre Acenta with Automatic Transmission. These are both petrol driven vehicles.
Standard Almera safety and security features include:
- Driver and Passenger Airbags
- An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
- Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD)
- Brake Assist (BA)
- ISOFIX child seat anchors
- A High Mounted Rear Stop Light
- A NATS Immobilizer
- The Nissan DataDot Anti-theft Identification System
Did You Know? The Nissan Almera which was sold in South Africa before this third generation vehicle was, in fact, an all-new car that used the Almera name. It was designed and built to continue the legacy of the original Nissan Almera that so many South African’s came to love over the years. This Almera “version 2.5” as it were was a unique tribute to an iconic car which has now been replaced by the current third-generation Nissan Almera seen on our New Nissan Almera Vehicle Page across the globe and not just on our South African Showroom Floors. |

2nd Generation Nissan Almera
2000 – 2006
|
The second-generation Nissan Almera which was launched in January 2000 was a lot different from the previous generation and consisted of a more stylishly appealing look that included smoother curved body lines. Assembled both in the UK and locally here in South Africa, this generation of Almera maintained strong worldwide sales up to the point where it was discontinued in 2006.
One of the big differences between this and the previous generation of Almera was that it now offered even better handling, tyre grip and drive dynamics due to a range of improved body and mechanical characteristics. Because of this the second-generation Nissan Almera was more sure-footed and stable on the road and offered exceptionally nimble drive characteristics, which were not something often found in a family car of this period.
In 2003 the Almera received a facelift, which brought it in line with modern vehicle design trends thanks to its updated styling. This facelift was not just cosmetic, however, as it also included a retuned suspension, a choice of new engines and an updated and improved vehicle interior. This version of the Almera offered an improvement on the already impressive road handling of the Almera, as well as quieter drive characteristics.
Did You Know? This version of the Almera was a direct result of the Nissan and Renault partnership, and the chassis was so impressive that it was also used as the base for the new Nissan Primera and Nissan Almera Tino. Additionally, the five-door Almera hatchback (which was not available in South Africa) was sold in Australia and New Zealand as part of the Nissan Pulsar range. |

1st Generation Nissan Almera
1995 – 2000
|
Dating back to 1995, the history of Nissan Almera is that it was designed to be a replacement for the popular Nissan Sunny, but very quickly surpassed its predecessor in the hearts and minds of the world’s driving population.
This first-generation Almera came standard with some rather impressive features for its time, which included power steering, a driver airbag, electric mirrors and a stereo system. The Almera received a cosmetic facelift for 1998 model year, and while it retained its appealing luxury and safety features its new look consisted of:
- A re-designed front bumper
- Front splitters in the Si and SRi trim levels
- An all-round bodykit as standard on the GTi trim level
The telescopic radio aerial was also replaced by the “bee-sting” aerial on all Almera trim levels.
Did You Know? Nissan originally tried an unconventional approach to its advertising in countries like the UK when it came to introducing the public to the first-generation Nissan Almera. It did this by naming it the “the car they don’t want you to drive” in their advertising slogan, a strange move that paid off handsomely as it established the brand as something out of the norm and created a demand for it that was unprecedented at the time. This resulted in the creation of many special edition Almera cars, all of which went on to show impressive growth and sales figures across the globe during the 1990s. |
